I have always believed that attending college in New Orleans is like studying abroad for four years. The food, music, and Mardi Gras make living in the â€Å"Big Easy† an experience unlike any other. â€Å"Lessez les bon temps roulez† (let the good times roll) is a city mantra ever apparent throughout NOLA, including on the campus of Tulane University. Only a few miles from the French Quarter, bordering the Garden District (a neighborhood straight out of a storybook), across the street from the majestic Audubon Park, and a short walk from the Mississippi River lies Tulane’s Uptown campus. Academically challenging and historically rich, Tulane has evolved into a Southern-rooted school with a strong northern presence, due to over 30% of the student body hailing from the Northeast. When I was making my college visit rounds, Tulane was the first campus where I stepped into the main academic quad and thought, â€Å"this is what college looks like," and I fell in love. The campus is made-up of old stone buildings separated by green grassy quads sprinkled with students reading books, frisbees being thrown year round thanks to the tropical climate, and live jazz music every Friday at the student center. Tulane’s size, with 6,000 undergraduates, allows for an intimate student body and small classroom sizes, and yet I was meeting new friends well into my graduation week. The school, much like the city it calls home, is truly unique. Professors teach classes outside under large oak trees seasonally decorated with Mardi Gras beads thrown by students returning from the parades. Football games are currently played in the splendor that is the Superdome. Springtime brings Jazzfest to the city and, my personal favorite, Crawfest to campus, an event open to the community where 75,000 pounds of crawfish and live music is served with a side of perfectly seasoned potatoes and corn. Trips to the Louisiana bayou for swamp tours, the Florida panhandle for beaches, and out to Ponchatoula for the Strawberry Festival are Tulane student staples. But weekends are not only spent touring the south and exploring the history and culture of the French Quarter, home to the longest running public market in the country and New Orleans food classics like beignets and jambalaya. They are also a time for students to give back to the city they have fallen in love with. Public service is a requirement in Tulane’s core curriculum, and community serviceclubs and events reach far beyond necessity for students. Tulanians tutor in local schools, build and rebuild homes in the Ninth Ward and West Bank, and install energy saving light bulbs throughout the city, amongst other ongoing projects. Service comes with the New Orleans experience, and only enhances the connection between students and the greater community. When I chose to attend Tulane, I did not realize that the school would give me much more than just an education and a degree. I particularly enjoyed how professors were able to integrate the city into their curriculum. Through professors of social history in New Orleans granting extra credit for attending a brass band concert, or having an education course that corresponded with volunteering at local charter school, I was able to learn, absorb, and understand what I was being taught on a new level. New Orleans is a small city with a lot to offer and Tulane works continuously to make sure the relationship between the residents and the university is strong. Thanks to my four years in New Orleans, I can tell the difference between Creole and Cajun food. When someone yells â€Å"Who dat?† at me I know how to answer. I smile when I hear â€Å"When the Saints Go Marching In,† and I know that a parade isn’t just a parade, it is a â€Å"krewe† and a way of life. But most importantly, I discovered a city and a school that embraces all who call it home. Insider Tip: Eat often and eat plenty. New Orleans cuisine is delicious, diverse, and cheap so get ready to become a foodie and don’t be afraid to try new things (alligator cheesecake anyone?). Food festivals from BBQ to Po Boys occur weekly and are often coupled with an array of jazz and blues bands. Tulane also brings the food to students. A Raisin in the Sun The Madison Repertory Theatre has produced many plays by African American playwrights recently, such as last year's From the Mississippi Delta, but their most recent, Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun is certainly one of the veryWorst. The play starts in a darkened living room. Ruth Younger wakes her family on a Friday morning. Her father-in-law has recently died, and the family is awaiting the arrival of the insurance money. Her husband, Walter, has plans to use it to buy a liquor store, but wife doesn't believe he belongs in business. Beneatha, Walter's sister daughter, hopes to use the money for her tuition for medical school. Walter's mother, Lena (Mama), plans to use the money for a house for the family. On top of all this, Ruth has discovered that she is pregnant. In an effort to find a true identity, Beneatha has shunned her mother's religious beliefs and has taken an interest in Asagai, a Nigerian student. Asagai brings her a tribal drum recording and a robe from his country. Beneatha is also being pursued by another suitor. George Murchison, a student belonging to the upper class also has an interest in her, and regards her embracement of African culture as childish. After the money arrives, Mama leaves to "take care of some business." When she returns, she announces just what it was that she did do: she has bought the family a house...in Clybourne Park, an all-white neighborhood. Mama then entrusts the rest of the money to Walter, to invest in his sister's education, and to put the rest into a savings account under his name. There is much seriousness about the issue of white-collar crime. What is white-collar crime you may ask. White-collar is defined as, ‘a generic term for crimes involving commercial fraud, cheating consumers, swindles, insider trading on the stock market, embezzlement and other forms of dishonest business schemes. The term comes from the out of date assumption that business executives wear white shirts and ties. It also theoretically distinguishes these crimes and criminals from physical crimes, supposedly likely to be committed by â€Å"blue collar† workers. † Many people do not realize how serious white-collar crime is. There are many different forms of white-collar crime, our textbook states, â€Å"white-collar or economic crime includes (1) securities and commodities fraud; (2) insurance fraud; (3) health care and medical fraud; (4) telemarketing fraud; (5) credit card and check fraud; (6) consumer fraud, illegal competition and deceptive practices; (7) bank fraud, embezzlement and pilferage; (8) computer-related fraud; (9) bankruptcy fraud; (10) bribes, kickbacks and payoffs; (11)money laundering; (12) election law violations; (13) corruption of public officials; (14) copyright violations; (15) computer crimes; (16) environmental crimes; and (17) receiving stolen property This assignment requires us to write a paper on a form of white-collar crime that we feel is the must dangerous form and why. I feel the most dangerous form of white-collar crime is police corruption, which is also defined as public corruption. Public or police corruption is defined as; Public corruption involves a breach of pu blic trust and/or abuse of position by federal, state, or local officials and their private sector accomplices. By broad definition, a government official, whether elected, appointed or hired, may violate federal law when he/she asks, demands, solicits, accepts, or agrees to receive anything of value in return for being influenced in the performance of their official duties. As, I previously stated, white-collar crime is a very serious problem in America and there are many reasons why and many cases, statistics and evidence to support my reasonings. My reasonings for choosing police corruption as the most dangerous form of white-collar crime differ and are probably pretty biases. Police corruption is a very dangerous crime, because police are supposed to protect and serve. So, if you have a department that is corrupt they are not doing what they were hired to do. When you swear in as an officer you state that, As a Law Enforcement Officer, my fundamental duty is to serve mankind; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all persons to liberty, equality and justice. I will keep my private life unsullied as an example to all; maintain courageous calm in the face of danger, scorn or ridicule; develop self-restraint; and be constantly mindful of the welfare of others. Honest in thought and deed in both my personal and official life, I will be exemplary in obeying the laws of the land and the regulations of my department. Whatever I see or hear of a confidential nature or that is confided to me in my official capacity will be kept ever secret unless revelation is necessary in the performance of my duty. I will never act officiously or permit personal feelings, prejudices, animosities or friendships to influence my decisions. With no compromise for crime and with relentless prosecution of criminal, I will enforce the law courteously and appropriately without fear or favor, malice or ill will, never employing unnecessary force or violence and never accepting gratuities. I recognize the badge of my office as a symbol of public faith, and I accept it as a public trust to be held so long as I am true to the ethics of the police service. I will constantly strive to achieve these objectives and ideals, dedicating myself before God to my chosen profession†¦ law enforcement. Relative to other opportunities, legitimate or illegitimate, the financial temptations are enormous. Many police officers are demoralized by the scope of drug trafficking. No matter how diligent an officer may be eradication programs and millions of arrests have done little to stop drugs which are now cheaper, purer, and more available than ever. Given the dangers of their job, the indifference of many citizens and the frequent lack of appreciation are no doubt disheartening. Some police also recognize that their real function is not so much to protect victims from predators but to regulate an illicit market that can’t be suppressed and that much of society prefers to keep underground. † Many individuals do not realize how serious and how often this happens in law enforcement departments and how many officers get away with corruption and how much it dishonors their departments. This is why I believe police corruption is the most dangerous form of white-collar crime. As I previously stated, I believe it is important for a community to feel safe and confident in their enforcement officers. So, the corruption of officers will and could cause very serious problems in a community. If the police, the authority of the community are involved in crime then why would the community is going to be involved also.
